- Stay active. Decide on an exercise program that is right for you and talk to your doctor about it. Regular exercise improves balance and strength. It also helps keep your joints, tendons, and ligaments flexible,
which will help keep you from falling.
- Get your vision and hearing checked. They both play a key role in your balance and the prevention of falls. If you get new eyeglasses or contact lenses, take time to get used to them. Always wear your glasses or
contacts when you need them. If you have diabetes, make sure to schedule an annual diabetic eye exam2. If you have a hearing aid, be sure it fits well and that you are using it.
- Take your prescribed medications as directed. If you are taking medication that makes you feel sleepy or dizzy, talk to your doctor right away about your options.
- Stand up slowly. Getting up too quickly can cause your blood pressure to drop, which can make you feel unsteady. Consider using your Over-the-Counter (OTC) Product Allowance to purchase a cane, walker, or another assistive device. Learn how to use these devices properly and always use them
when walking. Be sure to use the handrail when going up and down stairs.
- Get enough sleep. Doctors say if you are sleepy, you are more likely to fall. Aim for 7–9 hours of rest every night.
- Always tell your doctor if you fall even if you didn’t get hurt. They can help you come up with a plan to prevent future falls.
- Avoid wearing slippers and socks around the house. They might cause you to slip because they do not have much traction. Instead, wear sensible shoes with nonskid soles.
- Keep your home well-lit to avoid tripping on objects that may be hard to see. Use night lights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways. Make sure a lamp is in reach of your bed in case you need get up in the middle of the night.
- Look around your home for items that could be a tripping hazard. To make your home safer, remove boxes, electrical cords, and phone cords from walkways. Secure loose rugs with double-face tape, or remove them altogether.
- Assistive devices in the bathroom, like grab bars and anti-slip bathmats, can be a big help. Through your plan, you may obtain up to two bathroom safety devices3 per year through NationsBenefits®. You can
order these products and more here. You can also call 1-877-438-7521 (TTY: 711), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
